Garden

2 acres of lavender fields in Provence France

Good Idea Studio redesigned the front facade with a welded tube steel staircase, an aluminum-and-polycarbonate awning, and fiber cement-board paneling painted “Pool Party” blue.

Surrounded by flax, agaves, and a prolific lemon tree, the gravel terrace out front makes an inviting place to eat, work, or party. Molina and Turin fashioned the table from repurposed glass and Unistrut tube steel and the humble chairs from plywood wrapped in sheets of blue foam.

RANDOM

The three-dimensional wall art, “I feel good today,” is a result of creative minds coming together. The location: A popular morning coffee and lunch spot, the erste liebe bar in Hamburg (erste liebe means first love in German). The bar’s owners are the video producers at erste liebe film who work right above the bar.

The artist: Niels Bruschke of Santiago Design, who used a Viktor bike from Schindlehauer as the focal point. The partner: Bruschke was asked to do this piece by Two Wheels Good, a bike shop and promoter and creator of urban mobility concepts. Their first location is at Bismarckstrasse and the second one opened this summer at the new bike-loving 25hours Hotel HafenCity.

All of which just proves Oprah Winfrey’s point: “Here’s what my love affair with quotations has taught me: the more you focus on words that uplift you, the more you embody the ideas contained in those words.” - Tuija Seipell

The curved glass wall near the hallway—built by David Ditkowich of Joyce Contracting (718-257-7070, joycecontracting.com) using glass bricks from Home Depot (locations throughout the city; visit homedepot.com)—conceals the couple’s home gym. “I like having the exercise equipment hidden,” explains Benner, “but it allows the light to come through

The hall ceiling light is from art-supply-cum-furniture emporium Lee’s Studio, one of Benner’s favorite lighting resources. All of the “petals” are removable for easy cleaning.

I like the divider for the room if a larger space, especially at end of room with outdoor area being divided betwee nthe room

MAPS

Designer Steven Shailer hung an overscale circa-1734 parchment-paper map of Paris in his compact apartment in Manhattan's West Village; he found it in a dealer's stall at the Marché aux Puces when he was a college student studying abroad.

To add some local charm to the crisp white walls of his East Hampton house, interior designer Robert Stilin hung a pair of vintage Long Island maps, purchased from Nellie's of Amagansett, above an oak-and-metal bench from R. E. Steele Antiques.

PARIS

Home in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, a Paris suburb. The couple hired Barbier & Barton, a Paris-based architectural firm to renovate and expand a 19th-century stone-and-glass building, a former gardener’s residence with a second-floor greenhouse

The living room where nature gets the spotlight. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a wrap-around wooden deck.
The living and dining area is sleek and sparsely decorated, highlighted by a futuristic black metal fireplace, by Focus, suspended from the ceiling. For the floors, the couple liked the soothing light-gray of the unfinished concrete.

A wood-and-metal bridge joins the second story of the renovated gardener’s building with the newly constructed portion of the house.

Glass panels, large and small, are found throughout the house, paying homage to the old greenhouse. A sitting room on the second floor looks out onto the lawn and a fruit orchard.

The Besnards sought to blur the lines between the inside and outside, and large sliding-glass panels in the living room helped achieve that goal. A 19th-century stone retaining wall adds Old World charm in the background.

The master bedroom, on the second floor, is a bright lofty space with large windows looking onto treetops.

A spacious glass shower shaped like a cube and two wash basins are on the far end of the lofty master bedroom. “In Paris flats you are stuck with small bathrooms; I wanted a large shower

A curving path leads to the home’s main entryway. The old stone structure, right, dates to the 1870s. The architects used larch planks on the exterior of the newly constructed portion of the home.
